Is your home feeling dull? Think about incorporating small amounts of texture to make a statement. #design http://t.co/ZOgsUwsK9L
A few months ago, I introduced you to my craft room and gift wrapping center – all custom built in the family room closet. What you didn’t see was the other side of the room. That’s where our media center is.
We designed the media center with storage in mind. It was important for us to have closed storage options since our family room also acts as a guest room. With this design, we can keep the room tidy for ourselves and for our guests. We have closed cabinets with toy bins so our kids can easily grab toys and games, play to their hearts’ delight, and then put everything back.
The system also includes storage for extra bedding and linens for our guests, and a hanging cabinet for their clothing. Another bonus: We can “hide” unsightly media wires and equipment in the background. It’s amazing how much we can organize and store in our media center, and it all looks neat and beautiful.
It’s a multi-purpose space – one to relax and read in, watch TV, play video games, and display special family memorabilia. We designed it with a chocolate peartree finish and traditional raised panel drawers and doors with brass hardware. It’s a darker, more elegant look than the craft center on the other side of the room, but the traditional design matches.
Some of my favorite features include:
- Speaker screens: Our TV speakers are hidden behind doors on the left and the right of the TV, with speaker fabric inserts to allow the sound to come through. (We also have tempered glass panels for the audio equipment cabinet.)
- Toy storage: We’ve got tons of cabinets to store bins of toys – including classics like Tinker Toys.
- Display: I love seeing our favorite books and family pictures displayed. We have a special area devoted to memorabilia from my grandfather, including a photo of him and his brother from the 1930s.
Take a look and let me know what you think! What kind of media center do you dream of having?
